Virtual Experts Quick Start

Quick Start with Your Own Expert Role

Follow these steps to make your own expert role.

Expert Name

Choice of relevant key professional title or name. It must include the key expertise required for focused answers. For the purpose of this guide, we use “expert gardener”. Always start a fresh, new chat.

Request to get into an expert role. The key words to be used are “act as a expert gardener”, where role is the title of the expert you want to answer your questions. Use the “second person” sentence structure for more pointy sentences.

Domain of Expertise

Define a very narrow domain of expertise. This will set the direction of the requests and answers. The simplest way to determine it using our example is to get the answer for the question “what key technical abilities make a gardener an expert at gardening?”. If asking ChatGPT this question, only use the core, relevant key technical abilities for your quest.

Context

Define background settings based on your geography and domain of interest. This will help avoid the long-winded answers around different scenarios, disclaimers and “it depends” type of answers.

The next section of the request will use the role, domain and background as boundaries.

Example: Making Jim - The Aussie Gardener

Determine the expertise relevant for a expert gardener:

“What are the key professional and technical abilities for an expert gardener who possesses in-depth knowledge of plant care, soil management and landscape design for Australian tropical and sub-tropical climates?”

Use the outline provide in the answer above for the role definition:

“Act as an expert gardener who possesses in-depth knowledge of plant care, soil management, and landscape design for tropical and subtropical climates in Australia, with the following key professional and technical abilities:”

List of professional or technical abilities for the Role:

The structure is similar to a resume, a key capability followed by specific skill-sets, products, technologies, tools etc. Only include what is relevant for any role templates you use, take out anything not directly related to what you want to know. Most of the expert role templates should be treated as a repository to be fine-tuned for individual needs. Remember to make the distinction between critical skills and optional skills in your selection. Accept, reject or change any of the suggested skills.

Focus of the Answers:

This is a critical part in getting relevant answers. Provide the expertise filters to guide any answers provided, relevant to the domain expertise.

Audience for Answers:

This is a final empathy filter to adjusts the answers to the audience. The audience can be you when the expertise benefits you directly. The audience can be a third party when you require to give expertise to a third party context or person. When you need straight answers, avoid defining a broad audience. Technical roles benefit from not having the audience filter, especially when you fine-tuned everything for a specialised focus.

End of Request:

Use a closing sentence to let ChatGPT know the end of the request. The simplest request is “Ready?” and the prompt will close and even start getting into the role. Other requests to try: “Ready to act as “an expert title you used at the start”? Optionally, you can set a name: “Your name is Jim” to help with follow-up questions.

“Ready?” is also a very powerful filter for short role requests.

At a minimum, a role request should have the role definition, explicit expertise with a given context. When you ask “Act as an expert gardener, expert in vegetables grown in the Midwest USA, providing help for a spring planting season”, you’ll get a multiple points exposition. Asking the same question with “Ready?” at the end, will get you a short confirmation. If you need orientation for next prompts, leave out “Ready”. If you need to get to a point, complete a role with “Ready?” for a short first reply. When experimenting with new roles, include “Ready” at the end with a prioritisation analysis: top three reasons for the importance of the expertise.

Extra bonus: if you use ChatGPT over the API, the longer the questions and answers, the more tokens you’ll be charged.

Experiment with Changes

Start with the virtual team of experts joining you for work and fun with My Expert GPT.

Use the roles with GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 and play with small, incremental changes. Use an editor.

Even if you use exactly the same role with exactly the same GPT model, you'll get different answers most of the times.

Too Long, Didn’t Read – TLDR:

The structure of an expert definition definition:

Expert Name and Role Expertise: “Act as an expert_of_choice in xyz_domain, with abc_key_capabilities in 123_context.”

Use an audience to focus the answers.

Use a closure with “Ready?” if you want to get to the point, exclude "Ready?" when you need orientation.
